Charlotte FC Secures Narrow Win Over New England Revolution
Despite playing with only ten men, Charlotte FC managed to secure a narrow victory against the New England Revolution on Saturday evening.
An early goal from Idan Toklomati proved decisive for Charlotte (6-6-3, 21 points), who will head into the World Cup break on a two-game winning streak. This victory allows Charlotte to split the season series with the Revs (8-5-1, 25 points), who defeated them 1-0 in their earlier matchup on May 4.
Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina recorded three saves and earned a clean sheet, marking his first in ten games for the home team. Matt Turner also made four saves for the Revolution.
Toklomati scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute. After receiving a pass from Will Cleary in the middle of the box, the Israeli attacker skillfully evaded his defender with his first touch and sent the ball into the bottom-left corner of the net with his second touch. This goal marked Toklomati’s fifth of the MLS season.
The Revolution faced difficulties in creating scoring opportunities during the first half, resorting mostly to long-range, low-quality shots. Their best chance to equalize came when Carles Gil’s 32-yard free kick required a diving save from Kahlina. In contrast, Charlotte continued to test Turner, who made several crucial saves to keep his team in the game.
After a period of back-and-forth play, Charlotte lost defender David Schnegg to a second yellow card. Schnegg received his second booking after bringing down Peyton Miller near the edge of the box. Playing with a man down forced Charlotte to adopt a more defensive strategy for the remainder of the match.
While New England dominated possession for much of the game, they struggled to convert that into meaningful chances. Despite controlling over 60% of the ball, the Revolution managed to get three fewer shots on target than Charlotte. Miller came closest to scoring for the Revs in the 60th minute, but his low, driven shot was deflected away by Kahlina.
