Tottenham Hotspur Considers Renewed Interest in Paulo Dybala After Near Miss in 2019
Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival in April has led to a positive shift for Tottenham Hotspur, who now need just one point from their final match against Everton to secure their Premier League status for next season.
Fans hope the club will turn its attention to new signings over the summer once they ensure their top-flight position. De Zerbi, who recently signed a lucrative five-year contract, is expected to receive backing from the Lewis family during the transfer window as he aims to reshape the current squad.
A significant overhaul will be necessary if Spurs are serious about narrowing the gap with their competitors next season. The team needs to bring in players who are experienced and ready to impact the game immediately.
Reliable Journalist Reports Tottenham May Revive Interest in Paulo Dybala
One player who appears to be on Tottenham’s radar is South American star Paulo Dybala.
In the summer of 2019, Dybala nearly joined Spurs after the Premier League club had agreed on a hefty £64.4 million fee with Juventus. However, the deal collapsed on transfer deadline day due to issues relating to his third-party image rights and Juventus’s eventual decision not to proceed with the sale.
Discussion has surrounded Dybala’s future at AS Roma, and after spending four years in Rome, he may leave the club on a free transfer. Despite his age and injury history, the Argentina international remains a sought-after player in European football.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke from Football Insider suggests Tottenham will be aware of Dybala’s situation and might look to attract him to the Premier League if he becomes available.
“If he doesn’t agree on a new deal with Roma and becomes a free agent, there will be Premier League clubs looking at him,” O’Rourke said on the Transfer Insider podcast.
“Tottenham have been long-term admirers of him; they tried to finalize a deal a few years ago, so I’m sure they will be aware of his situation.”
He further noted, “On his day, he’s a top player, having demonstrated that over the years in Serie A at Juventus and now at Roma. However, his age might deter some clubs, and he has faced injuries this season.”
Critiques of Dybala’s Availability
Dybala has been a prominent figure in Serie A for several years, boasting 131 goals and 79 assists in 369 league appearances, along with 22 goal contributions in 53 Champions League outings. His experience at the highest level is considerable, especially having won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022. However, at 32, he is not the dominant force he once was during his prime. Dybala also underwent knee surgery earlier this season, which limited him to only 21 league appearances.
Given his poor injury record, it may be prudent for Tottenham, who grappled with injuries this past season, to reconsider pursuing Dybala even if he becomes available as a free agent.
