Tottenham Hotspur Investigates Injury Causes Amidst Struggles

Tottenham Hotspur is looking into the possible role of the retractable pitch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in its alarming injury record. According to CentreGoals on X, the club has recorded more days lost to injury than any other team in the Premier League this season, resulting in a staggering total of 370 games missed.

This inquiry marks a crucial and necessary recognition that Tottenham’s persistent injury issues over two consecutive seasons cannot be dismissed as mere bad luck. Since the 2024-25 campaign commenced, the club has documented 123 injuries, including a concerning number of severe knee injuries and ACL complications. Given these statistics, the club is right to scrutinize every potential contributing factor with thorough consideration.

The retractable pitch, known for its innovation and celebrated features since its introduction, is under examination as a possible cause of the injury issues. This system allows the grass playing surface to slide in and out of the stadium, accommodating NFL games and other events. While unique in English football, it raises significant concerns about whether the surface transitions or the specific qualities of the grass pitch might be increasing physical risks to players when compared to standard stadium surfaces.

External tests on the pitch have already been conducted, but the results remain inconclusive. Further analysis is planned, indicating that the club is seriously dedicated to this investigation rather than treating it as a mere formality.

Injuries Derailing Tottenham’s 2025-26 Season

The impact of the injury epidemic on the team has been far-reaching. James Maddison has been sidelined for the entire season due to an ACL injury sustained in pre-season, while Dejan Kulusevski is also out for 12 months due to a patella issue. Additionally, Xavi Simons suffered an ACL injury that kept him off the pitch during the final weeks of the season. The injury list spans nearly every position in the squad, hampering the efforts of three different managers throughout the campaign.
