Celtic Eyes High-Profile Signings as Champions League Qualification Looms

Celtic is gearing up to target high-profile players as the summer transfer window approaches. The club’s board is delaying significant financial investments until they confirm their place in the Champions League group stage. According to Pete O’Rourke in Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, the situation is straightforward: qualifying for the tournament would greatly expand Celtic’s recruitment ambitions.

The team secured a dramatic Scottish Premiership title win, which has earned them a spot in the 2026-27 Champions League play-off round, placing them ahead of Hearts. This is the same stage where they faced a setback against Kairat Almaty last August, a lapse that still resonates at Parkhead. The 2026-27 play-off round already features champions from Austria and Scotland, in addition to teams from Norway and Greece.

Celtic’s Permanent Manager Appointment Will Influence Transfer Plans

Celtic’s recruitment team has begun to identify potential targets across various markets, but the club is expected to hold off on major financial commitments until a permanent manager is appointed. Martin O’Neill has acknowledged the situation, stating that if a player costs around five million euros, it makes sense for the board to pause and reassess. Bodo/Glimt striker Kasper Hogh, who netted five goals in five Champions League appearances last season, remains on the radar, with Bodo valuing him at £10 million.

“Winning the title definitely improves things, and if they can qualify for the Champions League, that will be a huge boost to the coffers at Celtic Park as well.

“We’ve seen Celtic over the last couple of years; they’ve waited (to sign players) until late on in the window because they were waiting to see if they could qualify for the Champions League.

“It will probably be a similar situation this year. We’ll see if Celtic can clinch qualification to the lucrative league stage of the Champions League.

“Obviously, it’ll also boost their chances of signing some of their top targets if they have got Champions League football to offer as well.”

Celtic Faces Departures as Squad Overhaul Approaches

The summer will also see some departures. O’Neill has indicated that Celtic is likely to sell Daizen Maeda unless he agrees to a new contract, as the winger enters the final year of his deal. Meanwhile, Lech Poznan is moving to secure Luis Palma on a permanent basis, with Palma expressing a preference to remain in Poland.
