Girona and Mallorca Relegated as La Liga Season Concludes

  • Girona and Mallorca went down on the final day of La Liga

  • Real Madrid won 4-2 whereas Barca lost away to Valencia

  • Champion Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Real Betis had already locked up the top five spots

On the final day of the La Liga season, Girona and Mallorca faced relegation after their last games. Robert Lewandowski said goodbye to Barcelona, and Dani Carvajal bid farewell to Real Madrid.

Both Girona and Mallorca needed wins and favorable outcomes elsewhere to avoid dropping from the bottom three. However, neither team achieved the necessary results and will join last-placed Real Oviedo in the second division next season.

A victory could have saved Girona, but the team, which finished third in La Liga just two seasons ago, settled for a 1-1 home draw against Elche. This result secured Elche’s safety.

While Mallorca won 3-0 against Oviedo, its poor goal difference compared to Osasuna and Levante led to its downfall.

“I am torn up. It’s our fault we are going down,” reflected Mallorca midfielder Sergi Darder.

Celta Vigo secured a sixth-place finish and the resulting Europa League spot after defeating Sevilla 1-0.

Getafe qualified for the Conference League after a 1-0 victory over Osasuna, finishing in seventh place.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, and Real Betis had all confirmed their spots for Champions League before the season’s final round.

The season will officially conclude on Sunday with Atletico facing Villarreal for a third-place finish.

Lewandowski Scores in Last Game

Lewandowski scored one final goal for Barcelona in a 3-1 loss against Valencia, marking his last game with the club. The 37-year-old striker and Barcelona are set to part ways this summer after four seasons, with his goal at Mestalla Stadium being No. 120 in blue and burgundy.

Barcelona clinched the league title with three rounds to spare this season.

Carvajal and Arbeloa Say Adiós

Carvajal received emotional ovations from the Santiago Bernabeu crowd during his last match for Real Madrid. The veteran right back was visibly moved as he was substituted.

As his contract nears expiration, Carvajal assisted Gonzalo García for the opening goal in a 3-1 victory against Athletic Bilbao, with Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé adding two more goals.

At 34, Carvajal has been a key player for Madrid, helping the club secure six Champions League titles since 2013, though new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold has taken over the right back position this season.

“Today I can’t stop recalling the golden age we shared,” Carvajal expressed tearfully to the crowd after the match.

Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa also concluded his stint, having replaced Xabi Alonso four months ago. He was unable to lead Madrid to a trophy, fueling speculation that José Mourinho may be poised for a return to the club.

In addition, defender David Alaba also played his last match for Madrid.

Azpilicueta Retires

Former Chelsea defender César Azpilicueta played his final professional match before retirement as Sevilla faced Celta. The 36-year-old Azpilicueta enjoyed a successful career with Chelsea, winning multiple trophies, including two Premier Leagues and the 2021 Champions League as team captain.
