Cavan Sullivan Nets First MLS Goal Ahead of Manchester City Move

In a significant personal achievement for Cavan Sullivan, the young player scored for the Philadelphia Union against Orlando City, as highlighted by MLS.

The goal, which occurred in the 75th minute of the match, came during Philadelphia’s narrow 4-3 loss. Sullivan converted a low pass from Ben Bender, reducing the score to 3-2 before the Union later leveled the game.

At just 16 years and 227 days old, Sullivan made history as one of the youngest goal scorers in MLS regular-season history, amplifying the buzz around a player considered one of America’s top prospects.

Sullivan’s transfer to Manchester City adds to the excitement surrounding his future. His current contract with the Philadelphia Union includes a move to the English Premier League champions, expected to take place once he becomes eligible.

Bradley Carnell Addresses Pressure on Cavan Sullivan

Philadelphia Union head coach Bradley Carnell commented on the pressure facing Sullivan after the match, emphasizing that while Sullivan brings unique one-on-one skills to the team, he should not be expected to solve every issue.

“Cavan provides us that [one-on-one ability]. He goes into one vs. one and changes the complexion of the game, then releases a center back out of a pocket, and then there’s space behind,” Carnell stated.

“He starts a trickle-down effect. [But] we shouldn’t put all our chips into a 16-year-old because that’s unfair on Cavan,” he added.

Carnell acknowledged Sullivan’s courage and influence while cautioning against over-reliance on him. The connection to Manchester City complicates this balance, with every performance now viewed through the lens of Sullivan’s potential European future.

For the Union, fostering Sullivan’s growth with patience seems to be the best strategy. He can certainly be a source of inspiration without being treated as a finished product.
