Lisbon: Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo may miss Portugal’s opening match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to receiving his first red card in international play. This occurred during a match against the Republic of Ireland on November 13, 2025, where Portugal lost 2-0. Ronaldo was shown the red card after a headbutt on Irish defender Dara O’Shea.

Initially, a yellow card was issued, but after a VAR review, it was upgraded to a red card. This is Ronaldo’s first red card in his history of playing 226 matches for Portugal. At the club level, he has received red cards 13 times.

As a result of this mandatory suspension, Ronaldo will miss the upcoming qualifier against Armenia. If Portugal wins that match, they will secure qualification for the World Cup. Ronaldo’s participation in the World Cup will depend on the length of his suspension, which follows FIFA disciplinary rules. These rules stipulate at least a two-match ban for serious fouls and a minimum three-match ban for violent conduct such as headbutting.

Friendlies before the tournament do not count towards this suspension. Therefore, if Portugal qualifies, Ronaldo may miss the opening match of the World Cup.
