A former key player for Jürgen Klopp, the ex-Liverpool midfielder is having a successful late career in the Saudi Pro League.

Liverpool faces pressure as they prepare for their Premier League match against Newcastle United, with concerns over their recent form and squad depth. Injuries and a thin midfield have made it clear that the current team is not as strong as it once was.

Not too long ago, Liverpool had one of the most reliable midfields in England, highlighted by Georginio Wijnaldum. Now 35, the Dutch player is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, away from Anfield but still in the limelight.

Wijnaldum joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in 2016, initially recognized for his goal-scoring ability. Under Jürgen Klopp, he developed into a key high-energy midfielder, crucial in winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.

After leaving Liverpool for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, he had a brief loan at Roma before switching to Saudi Arabia in 2023. At Al-Ettifaq, he enjoys more attacking freedom, often playing as a No.10 or even as a striker.

Why Wijnaldum is outperforming Benzema this season

His new role has yielded results. This season in the Saudi Pro League, Wijnaldum has netted nine goals and provided three assists in 16 matches, surpassing several notable players.

Karim Benzema has scored eight goals for Al-Ittihad, while Darwin Núñez has six in 15 outings for Al-Hilal. Wijnaldum’s stats reflect the effectiveness of his position change, and he has also taken on the captaincy at Al-Ettifaq.

Looking back on his departure from Liverpool in 2021, Wijnaldum expressed feeling undervalued, despite strong relationships at the club. His recent performances show a player who has regained confidence and purpose, even if it’s away from the Premier League spotlight.
