As the January transfer window is about to close, Liverpool secured a 4-1 victory over Newcastle at Anfield. Manager Arne Slot indicated that the team may add a new player before the Monday night deadline.
Slot also addressed rumors about a bid for midfielder Curtis Jones, with Inter Milan reportedly interested in him. He dismissed the idea, stating that there is no intention to “weaken” the team.
“In the last 48 hours, we are trying to look to strengthen the squad,” Slot said. “I don’t know exactly what is going on at this moment, but we prefer to strengthen the squad, not weaken it. Let’s see!”
The rumors of Jones’s departure intensified before the Newcastle match. Inter is said to be looking at a loan option with a future purchase agreement. However, the Liverpool Echo confirmed the club has no plans to let Jones leave.
“Inter are exploring their possibilities, especially with Davide Frattesi linked to a move to Nottingham Forest,” the report stated. “Nevertheless, the Liverpool Echo understands that Liverpool has no intention of allowing any exits from Slot’s squad this month.”
This season, Jones has played in 26 matches for Liverpool, with 20 in the Premier League and six in the Champions League. After the recent victory, Liverpool is currently fifth in the league and has advanced directly to the Round of 16 in Europe.
Statistically, Jones has only one assist this season, which came during a 1-1 draw against Burnley at Anfield on January 17.
Slot has utilized Jones in multiple positions this season, mainly due to injuries. His primary role is in center midfield, but he has also started at right back to cover for teammates.
Liverpool will play again on Sunday, February 8, facing Manchester City in a crucial top-six match. Slot hopes to have a new addition to the squad before the February 2 deadline, potentially allowing the new player to debut against Manchester City. Jones might also play, instead of potentially joining Inter Milan.
