The transfer window will close on February 2nd. Before that, Liverpool and manager Arne Slot are nearing a last-minute transfer for defenseman Lutsharel Geertruida, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Romano mentioned that initial discussions between Sunderland and Liverpool occurred due to Arne Slot’s long-standing connection with Geertruida, dating back to when he managed him at Feyenoord. This established relationship has helped facilitate the deal, which was agreed upon days ago.

However, this transfer faces some complications. Geertruida is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, which adds complexity to the deal for Liverpool as they seek a proper resolution.

This development follows Liverpool’s impressive 4-1 victory over Newcastle at Anfield. After the match, Geertruida suggested that Liverpool is looking to strengthen their squad before the deadline.

“In the last 48 hours we are trying to look to strengthen the squad,” Slot stated. “I don’t know exactly what is happening at the moment but we prefer to strengthen the squad, not weaken it. Let’s see!”

There have been many rumors surrounding Liverpool lately, including that midfielder Curtis Jones might leave. Inter Milan is reportedly interested and has made a bid for him. Slot dismissed these rumors, emphasizing his intention not to weaken the team and instead focus on adding talent.

At 25 years old, Geertruida would be a valuable addition for Liverpool. He plays as a right-back but can also function as a center-back and in defensive midfield, showcasing his versatility. This season, he has played 17 games, starting 10 for Sunderland.

Geertruida had his best season in 2023-24 under Slot, with eight goals and five assists in 34 matches, totaling 3,038 minutes of play, which is the most he has played in a single season. He has also made 19 appearances for the Dutch National Team.

Liverpool will return to action on Sunday, February 8th, after the transfer window closes. They will face Manchester City, who are currently second in the Premier League standings, while Liverpool holds fifth place, just seven points apart. Liverpool will aim to enhance their roster for this important match.
