Leon Goretzka has previously attracted interest from Manchester United as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba in 2021, though nothing came of it then.

In 2023, United showed interest again, but the opportunity to sign him may be better this summer. The German midfielder is set to leave Bayern Munich as a free agent.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano addressed inquiries about the possibility of United signing Goretzka, but he downplayed the speculation.

“I’m getting many questions about Leon Goretzka,” he said in a recent YouTube update.

“Goretzka will leave Bayern as a free agent in the summer, but he will have many options. From what I know, Manchester United is planning to make significant moves for midfielders this summer, definitely, very significant.”

“They might sign one or two midfielders since Casemiro is departing, which means they will be strong in that area.”

“However, at this point, I’m not aware of any concrete developments regarding Goretzka.”

United requires a mix of youth and experience in midfield

Casemiro’s exit means United is losing a wealth of experience. The five-time Champions League winner’s influence on the pitch and in the locker room will be tough to replace.

Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton are two promising young players at 23 and 21, respectively, who could inject energy and long-term potential into the squad.

Ineos seems focused on a forward-thinking recruitment strategy, aiming to build a competitive team for the future rather than seeking quick fixes.

If Goretzka joins Manchester United, he would be their oldest signing under Ineos. Nevertheless, he still has much to offer and could mentor young talents like Kobbie Mainoo.

If they recruit two new midfielders, blending a younger player with an experienced one could create a valuable balance without overspending.
