Concerns over Chelsea Pathway
Jeremy Jacquet was Chelsea’s main target for a centre-back in January, and personal terms were already settled.
However, Rennes preferred a summer transfer and did not want to release him mid-season, which allowed Liverpool to intervene, according to Fabrice Hawkins.
Chelsea’s defense is already tight, with several senior players healthy and others returning from injuries or loans.
This made regular playing time seem less likely, especially in a setup that uses only two starting centre-backs.
Liverpool Offers Immediate Need and Long-Term Vision
Liverpool emphasized their need for new players and a clearer opportunity to join the squad.
The club has agreed to pay up to 72 million euros for Jacquet, who is viewed as a solution to their defensive issues.
Ibrahima Konate’s contract is nearing its end, and injury challenges have left Liverpool’s defense vulnerable.
Additionally, Jacquet was reportedly worried about his chances in an already crowded Chelsea team.
This demand for fresh talent gave Jacquet a real opportunity to make an impact rather than waiting for chances at Chelsea.
