The Colorado Rapids have traded midfielder Cole Bassett to Portland Timbers FC for $2.65 million.

If Bassett meets certain performance goals, the Rapids could earn an additional $950,000. They will also get a share of any future transfer or trade involving him.

“We are excited to welcome Cole Bassett to the Portland Timbers. He has been a strong player in MLS for several years, and his goals match ours as he moves forward in his career,” said Timbers general manager Ned Grabavoy.

“He will enhance our midfield with his skills in attack and playmaking. We look forward to having him on our team and believe he will be key for us in the future.”

Bassett, a native of Littleton, Colorado, came up through the Rapids’ academy and holds the record for the most MLS regular season appearances (155), starts (128), minutes (11,286), goals (31), and assists (22) by a homegrown player. He was also the youngest player in the club’s history to play a full match (17 years, 77 days) and the youngest to register a goal (17 years, 252 days).

In club history, Bassett ranks tied for fifth in appearances, sixth in goals, and ninth in assists and minutes played.

“Cole has been a vital part of this club, not just for his contributions on the field but for how he represented the Rapids off the field too,” said team president Padraig Smith.

“As a homegrown player, he set a great example in our locker room and community for younger players coming up through our academy. We appreciate all he has done for the club and wish him success in his next adventure.”

Bassett was named to the MLS 22 Under 22 list three times from 2019 to 2021.
