Kevin Durant almost joined a different team in the Western Conference.
According to a report by Darren Wolfson, Durant turned down a trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves last summer. He had concerns about playing for Minnesota’s head coach, Chris Finch, which influenced his decision.
Instead, Durant was traded by the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets later that summer. This season, he is averaging 26.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game for the 31-17 Rockets.
The Timberwolves are close to the Rockets in the standings with a record of 31-20. They are likely relieved they didn’t acquire Durant, especially given recent trade developments.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Timberwolves traded veteran guard Mike Conley Jr. in a three-team deal. This move has led to speculation that Minnesota could be in the running to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Interestingly, Durant was a childhood idol for Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards. The two had a notable moment together during the playoffs a couple of years ago. Instead of teaming up with Durant in Minnesota, Edwards now has a chance to partner with Antetokounmpo, who is six years younger than Durant.
