Tottenham boss Thomas Frank discusses conceding long-range goals.

This season, Tottenham has let in the third-most goals from outside the box. According to Thomas Frank, labeling this situation as bad luck or moments of brilliance does not address the real issue. He spoke to Football London about it:

“That can be a big analysis on that. There can be unbelievable quality in the moment from players, it can be a coincidence, it can be that we didn’t put enough pressure on the ball in a specific moment. I would like us to… you can say we scored two goals in the last four or five games, so that should have given us more points than we got. No doubt there’s a lot of things we can improve. One of them is to concede less.”

For a team with strong midfield players, this trend should not be happening. Tottenham has plenty of active players known for their pressing and ball-winning abilities. A high number of long-range goals indicates an issue with spacing, particularly in front of the defense. Poor spacing and indecision in the midfield lead to these problems, suggesting a systemic issue with how the team operates.

Long-range goals remain a concern for Tottenham

The situation looks even worse in comparison to other teams. Tottenham ranks third in terms of goals conceded from long-range efforts, only behind Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are near the bottom of the league. This shows that Spurs are allowing too many long shots, despite having better players and more control in matches. This should raise concerns within the club.
