Pete O’Rourke reports that Leeds United is looking to sign a new starting goalkeeper before the 2026/27 season. Daniel Farke recognizes that this position needs a significant upgrade for the club to remain in the Premier League long-term.

Goalkeeper Changes: Farke Seeks Summer Solutions

Farke has concerns about Lucas Perri. He recently chose to bench the Brazilian in favor of Karl Darlow, but doesn’t consider Darlow a long-term solution. Darlow will be in goal until the end of the season, allowing time for the club to find a better replacement. Meanwhile, Illan Meslier is set to leave for free this summer after a move to Besiktas fell through in January, ending his time at Elland Road when his contract expires.

Examining The Situation at Elland Road

This situation puts added pressure on the club’s scouts. Lucas Perri, now 28, arrived with high expectations but has underperformed, causing concern for a defense that is already struggling.

Farke’s decision to replace him with Karl Darlow highlights the seriousness of the issue. While Darlow is dependable, counting on an aging goalkeeper is only a temporary fix. Perri has the physical attributes but appears hesitant on crosses, and his passing leaves much to be desired. Keeping him in goal poses a significant risk that Leeds cannot afford.

The summer transfer window presents an opportunity to correct this mistake. James Trafford could be the ideal choice. At 23, he is currently a backup at Manchester City after returning from a loan at Burnley. He fits the profile of a modern goalkeeper that Leeds needs. While he may be costly, especially with Perri potentially being a financial loss, Trafford brings essential experience and potential.

Meslier’s departure will also help with the wage budget, creating space for a fresh start. Farke likely wants a goalkeeper who can distribute effectively, unlike Perri. The board must support him in pursuing someone of Trafford’s caliber. Retaining Perri could perpetuate the defensive issues. A decisive move now could provide Leeds with the stability needed to focus on improving their league standing.
