Anderlecht’s owner Marc Coucke has explained why the club sold Nilson Angulo to Sunderland for €20 million. Speaking on the show De Tafel van Gert, he detailed the financial situation that led to the winger’s unexpected January move.

Marc Coucke Explains Angulo’s €20m Transfer

According to Voetbal 24, Coucke stated that the club’s lack of European competition created a significant financial gap. To maintain financial stability, the board decided to sell key players.

Angulo was purchased for just €1.9 million in 2022, and the board considered this significant profit essential for the club’s future. They made this choice despite some frustrations regarding the timing of the sale.

“If you don’t play European football for a season, you’re in a situation where you have to sell to keep the club healthy,” he noted.

Sunderland’s Strategic Acquisition

Sunderland acted quickly, signing the 22-year-old Ecuadorian international on deadline day. The Black Cats needed a strong forward after Simon Adingra’s transfer to AS Monaco.

Adingra’s swift departure created a need in coach Regis Le Bris’s system, and Angulo is seen as a great fit. With seven goals and eight assists in 30 matches this season, he has proven he can perform well in England.
