Peter Schmeichel, known for his successful time at Manchester United, is remembered for lifting the Champions League trophy in 1999.
This victory against Bayern Munich in Barcelona is a highlight of his career at United.
Schmeichel joined from Brondby IF in 1991, and few expected his impact on Sir Alex Ferguson’s team.
Before leaving for Sporting CP in 1999, after a treble-winning season, he won five Premier League titles and achieved 180 clean sheets in 398 matches.
On the international front, Schmeichel played a key role in Denmark’s triumph at Euro 1992.
After retiring in 2003, he transitioned to punditry and returned to Denmark, now focusing on his television career.
In October, he expressed interest in returning to Old Trafford in a senior role.
He also shared insights about football finances with This is Money, discussing his financial journey and lessons learned.
Regarding his investments, Schmeichel stated:
“I have a couple of rental apartments in Copenhagen and my house in the city that I share with Laura and our two boys. Property prices have surged in Denmark!”
“One of the rental apartments has increased in value by 15 times what I paid for it,” the 63-year-old, who grew up in Gladsaxe, added.
However, Schmeichel also shared a costly mistake: he followed poor financial advice from a stock market expert regarding a windfarm investment.
Though he didn’t disclose the amount lost, he remarked, “I’m not saying how much I lost, but it was a lot.”
He also revealed that he accepted a pay cut to pursue a full-time football career, which began when he joined Brondby in 1987.
“I took a one-third pay cut to become a professional footballer, earning two grand a month. It was an experiment by the club, and honestly, I didn’t care about the money.
“I just wanted to be a full-time footballer and aimed to reach Manchester United as quickly as possible.”
