John Stones returned to the Manchester City team over the weekend, with speculation that Everton may consider a summer transfer.

Stones played in the FA Cup fourth-round match against Salford at the Etihad Stadium.

This was his first game since City’s 5-4 victory over Fulham late last year, as he has faced several injuries this season.

Stones played alongside Abdukodir Khusanov in defense.

While it was a positive moment for City supporters, his performance was below expectations.

The Manchester Evening News commented that Stones appeared “rusty” after his long absence and was “caught out” multiple times.

Pep Guardiola acknowledged after the match that Stones has yet to regain his best form. He noted, “He’s back. He still needs time; he’s not the John Stones that we knew, but his body language was really good in terms of the press and aggression,” as reported by ESPN.

This may give clubs reason to hesitate regarding a summer move for him.

Everton is reportedly interested, along with several other prominent clubs from Europe.

Everton should consider John Stones’ fitness issues

It was anticipated that Stones would take time to reach full match fitness, given his extended absence.

Guardiola’s remark about him “not being the John Stones that we knew” raises concerns for any club planning to pursue him this summer.

Everton is considering a potential free transfer for him. His performances in the upcoming months will be critical to watch.

Stones has been one of the top centre-backs in the league when fit, but doubts about his long-term fitness have resurfaced.

If signs show a decline in his performance, Everton will need to proceed with caution in their plans.
