Tottenham have faced a setback in their search for a Serie A midfielder.

Tottenham Hotspur needs to focus on securing results in the Premier League until the end of May.

New interim head coach Igor Tudor will debut against Arsenal in the North London derby at home on Sunday. Pundit Ally McCoist suggests Tudor has a tough challenge ahead with a challenging schedule, but supporters hope he can improve the team’s performance.

At the same time, club officials are preparing for the summer transfer window, with midfield a key area of concern. Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall have had surgeries and will be out for months. Meanwhile, Joao Palhinha’s future remains uncertain as he is on loan from Bayern Munich.

Napoli aims to secure Scott McTominay amid Tottenham interest

Spurs recently signed Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, but Bergvall’s injury has left them seeking additional midfield support. Reports indicate Tottenham is interested in Napoli’s Scott McTominay, but the club has not entertained any offers.

McTominay has been impressive for Napoli since transferring from Manchester United in 2024, helping lead the team to a Serie A title and scoring 12 goals along with six assists last season. He received the Serie A ‘MVP’ award and has become a well-known figure in Naples.

He has continued his strong form this season, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists, catching the attention of clubs across Europe, including Manchester United, which is considering a reunion.

According to a report from Fichajes, Napoli is in discussions with McTominay about a new contract until 2030 with better pay. The club aims to keep him amid increasing interest and views him as a crucial part of their project.

While McTominay is open to offers from England, he is focused on negotiating with Napoli, as he prefers to remain with the club due to his success and stability there.

Potential setback for Spurs?

Tottenham has struggled to score this season, with key absences like James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski significantly affecting their goal creation. While Gallagher is active in midfield, they need a strong box-to-box player who can help create chances and score.

This makes McTominay a suitable option for Tottenham. At 29, he is at a prime stage in his career and possesses the skills to make an immediate impact. However, his inclination to stay in Naples and secure a new contract may hinder Tottenham’s pursuit of him.

Although a deal for McTominay seems unlikely, he represents the type of player Tottenham should target to enhance their midfield heading into the summer.
