Aston Villa and Newcastle United are leading the race for Leeds United’s target, James Trafford. Both clubs aim to acquire the Manchester City goalkeeper when the summer transfer window opens. Reporter Pete O’Rourke on the Transfer Insider podcast also noted that Leeds United is a serious contender for Trafford.

Premier League Transfer Update: The Race for James Trafford

O’Rourke stated that clubs will evaluate their options as the transfer window approaches. Much depends on whether Leeds can maintain their Premier League status. Manchester City is said to want over £30 million for Trafford, a rise from the £27 million they paid to bring him back from Burnley.

In the podcast, he said: “Leeds will be among several Premier League teams looking at Trafford this summer.”

“Aston Villa is interested, and Newcastle has had a long-standing interest in Trafford, almost signing him before he returned to Manchester City.”

“If Leeds stays up, they might consider strengthening in this position. There are many factors to consider before anything happens, but I expect several clubs will monitor Trafford’s situation.”

“Ultimately, it will depend on what the player wants, especially if he seeks regular first-team action next summer.”

Should Leeds United pursue him?

Changes are happening quickly at Elland Road. It seems to be a crucial moment for their goalkeepers. Illan Meslier is likely to leave after a long tenure. Meanwhile, Lucas Perri, a summer acquisition, has not impressed enough to win over manager Daniel Farke. Despite high expectations, Perri has faced challenges, allowing Karl Darlow to become the preferred starter.
