Tottenham Eye Move for Juventus’ Lloyd Kelly

Tottenham Hotspur may further strengthen their defense this summer, looking at Lloyd Kelly after his solid performances at Juventus under coach Igor Tudor.

According to Chronicle Live, the 27-year-old, who previously played for Bournemouth and Newcastle, has regained his form in Italy after a challenging time at Newcastle. He has become a key player at Juventus, drawing attention from Premier League clubs. Spurs are keeping a close eye on him, especially given Tudor’s prior experience working with Kelly.

Kelly’s last two years have been noteworthy. After leaving Bournemouth on a free transfer in 2024, he joined Newcastle but struggled for game time under Eddie Howe, making only 14 appearances before moving to Juventus. There, he has played 33 matches, including in the Champions League, becoming vital to their defense.

Back to England?

His impressive form has significantly increased his market value, with Juventus reportedly seeking around $50 million if they decide to sell. This fee is much higher than what they initially paid and showcases his consistency and durability. For Tottenham, this investment would bring a seasoned defender entering his prime, instead of a project player.

The interest in Kelly makes sense, especially with Igor Tudor’s arrival. Coaches often prefer players they already trust, and Kelly fits this need well. He understands Tudor’s style, can play in both a back three and back four, and provides the physical presence Tottenham has sometimes lacked this season. His versatility in covering defensive areas may also benefit a team dealing with injuries.

Tottenham’s long-term plans for center-backs appear uncertain. Cristian Romero’s position is shaky after a season full of controversies and exit rumors, while Micky van de Ven is also attracting interest and may reconsider his future due to the club’s challenges.

Facing challenges near the bottom of the table makes it tough to lure elite defenders. While Kelly may not be an eye-catching signing, he offers the reliability Tottenham needs during a transitional phase. The main concern for Spurs is attracting players who can perform at a Champions League level if improvements aren’t seen soon.
