Alejandro Balde has shown promise as one of the top young left backs, but his recent performances have declined. With Joao Cancelo back at Barcelona, changes may be in store for coach Hansi Flick.
Gabriel Sans from Mundo Deportivo reports that Flick has excluded Balde from the starting lineup in the last two matches. In contrast, Cancelo excelled in Barcelona’s recent La Liga game, a 3-0 victory over Levante, where he assisted a goal and made three key passes, along with three tackles and interceptions.
Cancelo, who returned to Barcelona on loan during the winter transfer window, previously played for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.
Despite being only 22, Balde has not improved his attacking contributions since a standout season in 2022/23, and his defensive performance has plateaued. Cancelo brings more offensive options and possesses strong technical skills, allowing him to play effectively on the left.
Flick’s plans for team selection could be changing. The situations of Balde and Cancelo will be closely monitored as Barcelona prepares for important matches against Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.
