Newcastle United successfully moved into the Champions League last 16 after a thrilling 3-2 win over Qarabag in the second leg at St. James’ Park.
The team had already set the stage with a dominating 6-1 victory in the first leg, thanks to a remarkable four-goal effort by Anthony Gordon. With an aggregate score of 9-3, Newcastle comfortably advanced.
Eddie Howe’s side opened the scoring early, with Sandro Tonali finding the net just four minutes in after Sven Botman’s header fell to him.
Newcastle quickly doubled their lead within 80 seconds as Joelinton volleyed a cross from Harvey Barnes into the goal.
Qarabag responded five minutes into the second half, with Camilo Duran finishing neatly after a flick from Joni Montiel, bringing the score to 2-1.
However, Newcastle quickly regained their two-goal lead when Botman scored from Kieran Trippier’s corner.
Qarabag was awarded a penalty in the 57th minute after Dan Burn’s handball. Marko Jankovic’s penalty was saved by Aaron Ramsdale, but Elvin Cafarquliyev took advantage of the rebound to score.
Barnes forced a good save from Mateusz Kochalski, while Musa Qurbanli threatened Ramsdale at the other end. Newcastle held on to secure the win in the second leg.
