Troy Deeney’s latest Team of the Week for BBC Sport did not include Benjamin Sesko, despite his impressive showing. Instead, he spotlighted Bruno Fernandes.

Sesko was crucial in Manchester United’s 2-1 comeback win against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford last Sunday.

The 22-year-old Slovenian made his first start under interim coach Michael Carrick and quickly made an impact by scoring the opening goal.

Fernandes delivered a great cross from the right, and Sesko outperformed Jaydee Canvot, who had difficulty defending against him.

Sesko met Fernandes’ cross perfectly, heading it powerfully past Dean Henderson into the net’s corner.

Bruno Fernandes not only assisted but also scored a penalty, helping United dominate against Crystal Palace, who were left with ten men following Maxence Lacroix’s red card.

The Portugal international calmly sent Dean Henderson the wrong way with his penalty and later assisted the winning goal with an excellent cross.

While Deeney acknowledged Sesko’s contributions, he focused on Fernandes, emphasizing his leadership and overall impact in his BBC Sport column.

Deeney remarked: “Bruno, Bruno, Bruno. Every season, people write off his importance to Manchester United.”

“Year after year, he proves why he’s the captain and leader of the team. The ball for the winner was exceptional, and his penalty was executed perfectly.”

Michael Carrick singles out Benjamin Sesko for praise after his first Premier League start under new management

Sesko has mainly been used as a substitute under Carrick, but he made a strong impression in his first start.

After the match, Carrick shared his thoughts on Manchester United’s official website:

“Absolutely delighted for Ben. It hasn’t been problematic; he’s made a significant impact and is improving a lot.”

“He’s learning what it means to be here and what it’s like to play at this level. Sometimes we take that for granted.”

“He’s eager to succeed, works hard, and is a pleasure to coach. Today, he started, and that goal was fantastic; he’s contributing a lot.”

The 22-year-old played 75 minutes before being substituted by Amad Diallo in front of a full house at Old Trafford.
