Liverpool faced a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Wolves, which also underscored the impact of a player who once aspired to play at Anfield.

Joao Gomes showcased an outstanding performance in midfield at Molineux, helping Wolves disrupt Liverpool’s flow and maintain a strong physical presence throughout the match.

His showing served as a reminder that Liverpool had the opportunity to recruit him before Wolves finalized his transfer from Flamengo in January 2023.

Prior to joining the Premier League, Gomes expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of playing for Liverpool.

In an interview with ESPN Brasil in 2022, he stated, “Competing in the Champions League is my biggest dream in football, mine and my family’s. Liverpool are a team where I would love to play. I have the greatest desire to play [for Liverpool].”

However, it was Wolves who secured his signing from Flamengo at the beginning of 2023.

During the match against Liverpool, Gomes delivered a strong all-around display in midfield. According to Squawka, the 23-year-old completed six tackles, succeeded in four take-ons, and won 14 duels.

Manchester United and Napoli showing interest in Joao Gomes

Since his arrival, Gomes’ performances in the Premier League have piqued the interest of various clubs in Europe.

Reports from Italian journalist Nicolo Schira (via Il Napolista) indicate that Napoli is closely monitoring the midfielder and has already met with his representatives.

Manchester United is also believed to be considering Gomes as they explore options for midfield reinforcements.

As his reputation continues to rise, Gomes’ performance against Liverpool might serve as another indicator of the opportunity Liverpool missed three years ago.
