Recent rumors about Doc Rivers retiring seem to be overstated.

The Milwaukee Bucks head coach addressed a report this week regarding his future. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith claimed that Rivers plans to retire after the current season.

In a media session following the Bucks’ practice on Friday, Rivers responded to Smith’s assertion and clarified that he has no intention of retiring.

“No, I’m not getting into that,” Rivers stated, according to Eric Nehm of The Athletic. “That’s something that, I think [Smith] feels that way, but not for me.”

In his 27th season as an NBA head coach, Rivers has faced challenges in recent years. His history of playoff disappointments continues, and his tenure in Milwaukee has also been tough, with a record of 91-88 (.508) and no playoff series wins since he took over in 2024. Currently, the Bucks are five games behind the play-in tournament with a record of 26-35.

Rivers is contracted with Milwaukee for the next season at around $10 million. Given the uncertainty of securing another NBA head coaching position, he may choose to complete his contract or push the Bucks to let him go to collect the remaining value of his deal.
