Andy Thomas made five saves to help the Seattle Sounders secure a 1-0 win against St. Louis City on Saturday night, marking his second shutout of the season.
This was Thomas’ fifth clean sheet in his career. Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, who replaced injured defender Yeimar Gomez in the 23rd minute, scored the only goal for Seattle (2-1-0, 6 points).
The Sounders are on a club-record five-game road trip as Lumen Field is being updated to prepare for the FIFA World Cup this summer.
Roman Burki had three saves for St. Louis (0-2-1, 1 point), which was shut out for the second game in a row, having scored only once this season.
St. Louis controlled the first half with a 6-2 advantage in shot attempts, including two strong chances. In the 13th minute, Marcel Hartel forced Thomas into a diving save with a left-footed shot from the left side of the box. Thomas also caught a right-footed attempt by Cedric Teuchert from outside the box in the 27th minute.
Seattle capitalized on a mistake by St. Louis midfielder Conrad Wallem to score in the 47th minute. Jesus Ferreira intercepted Wallem’s pass and crossed it to Kossa-Rienzi, who scored with a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
St. Louis had 60% possession and took 12 shots compared to Seattle’s eight. They pressured for an equalizer late in the game, but Thomas managed to stop a strong right-footed shot from Hartel in the 81st minute.
