Manchester United is likely to welcome Lisandro Martinez back as they prepare for their Premier League match against Aston Villa.

The Argentine defender has been sidelined for the last three games due to a calf injury but is nearing a return.

According to the London Evening Standard and Premier Injuries, Martinez is expected to be available when United hosts Aston Villa on Sunday, March 15.

Before the 2-1 loss to Newcastle, Michael Carrick mentioned that Martinez was “not quite ready” for that match. However, it seems the 28-year-old is set to play against Villa.

Manchester United’s performance has declined in recent matches. Although they managed to win against Everton and Crystal Palace, the overall execution was lacking.

Martinez’s absence has been especially noticeable in maintaining possession. The team struggled to play from the back and deal with opposing pressure, areas where Martinez excels.

Statistically, he has been impressive. According to Gradient Sports, Martinez averages 7.73 line-breaking passes per 90 minutes this season, ranking third-best in the league and the highest among United players.

Carrick has previously noted that Martinez brings emotion and intensity to the game, qualities that have been missing while he has been injured.

Leny Yoro has filled in well defensively during this period, but he doesn’t match Martinez’s quality on the ball.

Lisandro Martinez’s Impact on Manchester United’s 2025/26 Season

After recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, Martinez returned to the Manchester United first team in November, and his presence enhanced results right away.

Since his return, he has only lost once in 14 appearances, with that defeat coming against Aston Villa at Villa Park. During that match, he moved to a defensive midfield position after Bruno Fernandes got injured in the first half.

Though he handled that transition well, he hasn’t played in that role since. Martinez will be eager to make an impact when Villa visits Old Trafford this Sunday.
