Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has shared how support from two Argentine teammates helped him during a challenging time in his career.
The centre-back has faced injury issues since joining Manchester United from Ajax in July 2022.
His most significant setback occurred in February 2025 when he tore his cruciate ligament, sidelining him for about 10 months after surgery.
In an interview with TyC Sports, Martinez expressed appreciation for the unexpected support from Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez during his recovery.
Previously, both players were rumored to have links with Manchester United.
Recently, there were surprising claims regarding Alexis Mac Allister potentially moving to Manchester United from Liverpool, which his father later denied.
On deadline day, Manchester United also considered signing Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa but eventually opted for Senne Lammens.
All three were part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad and have kept a strong connection through their national team.
Martinez mentioned that both players visited him at home unannounced during his recovery.
“It was one of the toughest situations. I needed everyone’s help; without them, it wouldn’t have been easy. You have to start from scratch again,” he stated.
“Dibu [Emiliano Martinez] and Mac Allister showed up at my house to support me. That shows what we are like in the national team, how we look out for each other.”
“Dibu sent me a message saying, ‘I’m coming to your house.’ When he arrived, he said, ‘Look, Mac Allister is coming too.’ It was a really nice moment.”
Martinez regained full fitness late last year and was playing regularly until he faced another setback in February.
This latest injury was a setback ahead of United’s match against Everton, causing him to miss several games, including a loss to Newcastle United.
Lisandro Martinez is determined to get back to full fitness and continue playing an important role for Manchester United as they aim for a strong finish this season.
