Recent reports from Germany indicate that Isaac Schmidt might return to West Yorkshire sooner than expected, as Werder Bremen is hesitating on his €3m purchase option. This information comes from a BILD report, via Sport Witness, where Werder’s director, Clemens Fritz, talked about the defender’s challenging situation.

Isaac Schmidt’s Future in Doubt as Werder Bremen Weighs Permanent Deal

Originally, the Bundesliga team viewed the 26-year-old as an essential part of their defense, but he has had limited playing time this season. The German club brought the Swiss-Nigerian full-back on loan from Leeds United last summer, believing they secured a good backup option.

However, the arrangement has not worked out as planned. Schmidt has struggled to get consistent playing time, even with injuries affecting the regular left-backs. He hasn’t managed to convince coaches Horst Steffen or Daniel Thioune to give him a starting role.

In January, things became more difficult when Olivier Deman joined the squad, pushing Schmidt further down the depth chart to third choice. Clemens Fritz has recently acknowledged the club’s uncertainty about making a permanent deal, stating it’s too early to decide by summer. While he appreciates the player’s effort, he did not guarantee anything about his future.
