Manchester City faced West Ham at the London Stadium, ending in a 1-1 draw. Following Arsenal‘s win earlier in the day, City needed a victory to stay close in the title race. Arsenal now leads City by ten points. City controlled the game with most of the ball but found it hard to break through West Ham’s solid defense. Overall, it was a disappointing night for City as they dropped two crucial points despite dominating possession.

Pep Guardiola made three lineup changes from the team that lost to Real Madrid, bringing in Rayan Ait-Nouri, Matheus Nunes, and Omar Marmoush. Ruben Dias and Jeremy Doku were benched. Savinho and John Stones were left out of the matchday squad. Mateo Kovacic returned to the bench after recovering from injury.

First half.

City began the match strongly, holding possession. Ait-Nouri made an early run but couldn’t deliver a cross. City earned three corners, all dealt with by West Ham. City continued to dominate but struggled to break through West Ham’s packed defense.

As the game reached the 15-minute mark, City maintained control, but West Ham was barely able to get a foothold on the game. City’s challenge was to break down West Ham’s tight defense.

After the equalizer, West Ham gained confidence and began to threaten City with counter-attacks. City had a chance to regain the lead in the 44th minute, pressing West Ham into a mistake. Haaland laid the ball off to Antoine Semenyo, who shot just wide. The half ended with City needing to improve after halftime.

Second half.

The second half began with a sense of urgency for City. They needed to increase their intensity and offer more in attack. West Ham looked to regroup and defend their score.

In the first ten minutes, Marmoush shot wide, while West Ham’s cross was cleared. City dominated possession again but struggled to create significant chances. Guardiola considered making adjustments to open the game up.

In the 61st minute, Haaland had a good chance saved by Hermansen. Thanks to a great pass from Rayan Cherki, Haaland’s shot was well saved from close range.

Haaland missed another good opportunity shortly after. A fine cross fell to him, but he shot wide. In the 78th minute, Rayan Cherki’s volley was saved at the near post by Hermansen.

Late in the game, Tijjani Reijnders hit a free kick that struck the crossbar in the 83rd minute, keeping the score level at 1-1.

As stoppage time began, City pushed hard for a win. They had several goalmouth scrambles. In the 94th minute, City earned a corner, but Marc Guehi’s shot from close range went over the bar. It seemed that would be their last chance.
