Marcel Hartel scored an impressive long-distance goal in the second half as St. Louis City secured its first win of the season, defeating the New England Revolution 3-1 on Saturday.
Simon Becher and Chris Durkin also contributed goals as St. Louis (1-3-1, 4 points) came back from an early setback to achieve its first victory under new coach Yoann Damet.
Hartel’s goal emerged in the 83rd minute when he intercepted a poor clearance by New England and launched a shot from about 40 yards out, sending the ball over New England’s keeper Matt Turner, who was caught off his line.
Ilay Feingold opened the scoring in the 14th minute for New England (1-3-0, 3 points), which had just celebrated a 6-1 triumph against FC Cincinnati, tying the team record for goals in an MLS match.
The Revolution started strong but conceded three consecutive goals to a St. Louis team that had only netted one goal prior to this match.
New England held 54.7% of possession during the game but managed only two shots on target.
The Revolution took the lead when Luca Langoni delivered a cross from the left side to Feingold, who scored with his right foot into the top right corner.
St. Louis equalized in the 29th minute as New England struggled to clear the ball. Daniel Edelman seized the opportunity and set up Becher, who finished with a left-footed shot into the top right corner.
Just before halftime, St. Louis took the lead, making it 2-1 with a corner kick from Rafael Santos that found Durkin in the box. Durkin connected with a shot just below the crossbar, securing the advantage for St. Louis City.
Turner, recently called up to the U.S. national team, recorded three saves for New England, while Roman Burki made one save for St. Louis.
