Real Madrid did not intend for Alvaro Arbeloa to be their long-term manager initially. Instead, he was brought in as someone with experience to help ease tensions within the club after Xabi Alonso’s controversial management style.
After a challenging game against Atletico Madrid at the start of the 2025/26 season, Real Madrid bounced back with a thrilling 3-2 win at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Following this match, there has been a strong call for Arbeloa to take on a permanent managerial role. According to a report from MARCA, several key players, including center back Antonio Rudiger, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, midfielder Fede Valverde, winger Vinicius Junior, and defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, are advocating for Arbeloa to remain in charge for the upcoming season.
Support from Valverde and Vinicius Junior
It’s no surprise that Valverde and Vinicius are supporting Arbeloa. Both players faced difficulties under Alonso, often playing out of position and, at times, being sidelined despite being major contributors to the team.
Arbeloa quickly rebuilt their confidence and restored their key roles, playing essential parts in the recent victory over Atletico.
While Arbeloa wasn’t initially seen as a tactical mastermind, he has shown himself to be a relatable and humble leader, quite different from Alonso, who was gaining fame as an emerging manager.
Arbeloa’s character and past experience at Real Madrid position him as a suitable successor to the respected Carlo Ancelotti.
At this stage, it would be surprising if Real Madrid didn’t retain Arbeloa as manager. With the support of influential players, especially Courtois, it is likely the club’s president, Florentino Perez, will back this decision, emphasizing the importance of player welfare.
