Manuel Ugarte has had a tough time breaking into the Manchester United lineup but still received a call-up for Uruguay during the March international break.
Since joining Old Trafford in the summer of 2024 from PSG for £42.2 million, the midfielder has not made a significant impact, even under former coach Ruben Amorim.
The two had previously worked together at Sporting CP, but Amorim noted that Ugarte wasn’t performing as he did in Lisbon.
After Amorim was dismissed in January 2026, Michael Carrick took over as caretaker manager, further limiting Ugarte’s playtime.
Since Carrick’s appointment, Manuel Ugarte has played only 70 minutes across six matches yet still earned an international call for Uruguay’s friendly against England.
However, the match did not go as planned for him. Ugarte received two yellow cards but was not sent off for a red card.
His first yellow came in the first half for a foul, followed by another yellow in the second half for dissent.
Referee Sven Jablonski did not show a red card after the second yellow, and Ugarte was substituted in the 87th minute.
After the game, ITV host Mark Pougatch revealed that the first yellow card was actually issued to Jose Maria Gimenez, and the second yellow was overturned.
