The track has faced political deadlock for almost 15 years, despite ongoing talks about renovations. A Vanderbilt University Poll found that 36 percent of residents support demolishing the track, while only 26 percent want NASCAR to return to the circuit.

A separate poll by Power Poll, which gauges civic leaders and influencers, revealed even poorer support for NASCAR. It indicated that 55 percent favor demolition, with only 29 percent backing NASCAR’s plans.

What Is The NASCAR Plan For The Fairgrounds?

Speedway Motorsports, which owns several tracks in the U.S. and Nashville Super Speedway, proposed to lease and manage the Fairgrounds Speedway. The plan included an estimated investment of $116 million to renovate the Speedway for NASCAR’s return.

This proposal, made in 2021, hit a roadblock for various reasons. It aimed to revive racing in the area with a proposed 10-race calendar and the possibility of a Cup race. The renovation intended to increase the track’s capacity from 14,000 to about 30,000.

In contrast, plans for urban redevelopment are being put forward by Fairgrounds Preservation Partners. This proposal would replace the oval with 600 residential units and a ‘Fast Track’ for electric racing.

Another plan suggests using part of the oval for affordable housing and the remainder for parking at a nearby soccer stadium. Unfortunately for racing supporters, the redevelopment proposals seem more feasible, casting doubt on NASCAR’s return.
