Marcelo had a remarkable career, playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and regularly facing Lionel Messi. Few players have experienced these matchups at such a high level.
The Brazilian first met Ronaldo as an opponent during a friendly between Brazil and Portugal in 2008, before later teaming up with him at Real Madrid, leading to many successes.
Marcelo faced Messi numerous times in competitive matches, including fierce encounters between Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as international games between Brazil and Argentina.

In an interview with Romario, Marcelo was asked to choose between the two legends.
The former Barcelona star asked: “You faced Cristiano and Messi. Who was more challenging to play against?”
“Messi. Messi is unbelievable; I’m still trying to catch him today,” Marcelo replied.
He explained that Messi’s understanding of the game makes him hard to defend, noting: “He knows where to position himself. When a player passes the ball, he already knows where to move next.”
The stats highlight the rivalry, with Marcelo facing Messi 33 times, gaining 10 wins, 7 draws, and 16 losses.
Although he preferred Messi, Marcelo respected both players, saying: “I am grateful to have played during their times.”
He mentioned that it was a privilege to see them play, comparing it to earlier generations who enjoyed watching legends like Romario, Ronaldo, Diego Maradona, and Pelé.
