Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham stated that the team needs to “let things settle down” before selecting a new head coach following Javier Mascherano’s unexpected departure earlier this week.
Mascherano resigned for personal reasons, with ESPN reporting that his decision came after the weekend’s 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls.
Guillermo Hoyos, the sporting director, is now serving as the interim manager for the team (3-1-3, 12 points), which will face the Colorado Rapids on Saturday in Commerce City, Colorado.
Beckham expressed on CBS Sports that Mascherano’s exit was “difficult.” Mascherano, aged 41, became the club’s coach on November 26, 2024, leading the Lionel Messi-led team to an MLS Cup victory in 2025.
“He came off the back of last season by winning our first championship,” Beckham stated. “He’s an amazing person and a great coach; the players loved him. But these things happen in football, and we must move on. We need to find a new coach soon, but right now, we have to let things settle. Owning a team brings its challenges.”
Mascherano took over from Gerardo “Tata” Martino. Inter Miami also reached the Leagues Cup final and the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal last year.
This was Mascherano’s first role as a club coach after he began coaching Argentina’s youth national teams in 2021. His teams reached the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the quarterfinals at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Alberto Marrero, the chief soccer officer, will now take on the sporting director responsibilities for Hoyos.
