Bruno Fernandes has shared insights into his strong training methods at Manchester United.
He revealed that his drive for high standards often led to disagreements within the team.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Fernandes explained that his competitive nature frequently resulted in conflicts with former assistant coach Mitchell van der Gaag during practices at Carrington.
Fernandes emphasized that the disputes were not personal but were motivated by his wish to keep the team’s intensity high.
“I had a lot of fights with him,” Bruno Fernandes said, highlighting how his training mentality reflects his game day attitude.
As captain, he feels responsible for setting the right example, believing his energy and commitment influence the rest of the squad.
Van der Gaag, who was closely involved with Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff, left the club in 2024, just before Ten Hag was sacked in October after disappointing results.
After his time at United, Van der Gaag became the manager of FC Zurich in May 2025.
His stint in Switzerland was brief, ending just five months later as he was let go, marking another quick chapter in his coaching journey.
Fernandes’ remarks shed light on the team dynamics during that time.
The midfielder positioned himself as a vocal leader, willing to engage with both teammates and staff.
His approach has been credited with helping sustain high standards amid the club’s transitional phase.
The United captain has also addressed Ruben Amorim’s time as coach, continuing to play a significant role both on and off the pitch as the team adapts to new leadership.
Despite the reported conflicts, Fernandes reiterated that his intent is to uplift those around him.
The 31-year-old insisted that his intensity is essential for progressing the team and meeting the expectations at Manchester United.
