The Portland Timbers are in need of points, while Minnesota United may be feeling the effects of fatigue.
The two teams will face off on Saturday night in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
After this match, Portland (2-4-1, 7 points) has upcoming games against San Diego and Salt Lake, struggling with an 0-3-0 road record this season.
“We need to pick up points in these matches,” coach Phil Neville stated. “We must change our mentality and focus on getting wins.”
Portland recently became the first team to score against LAFC this season, winning 2-1. This could boost their performance moving forward.
“We’re seeing leadership grow within the team,” Neville said. “Winning builds confidence and trust among teammates.”
However, Portland has allowed three goals in its last two away matches.
On the other hand, Minnesota (3-2-2, 11 points) has secured two consecutive 2-1 victories, including a win against San Diego last Saturday. Additionally, they narrowly defeated Sacramento Republic in a midweek match through penalties, using a mixed lineup.
The Loons intend to integrate new player combinations in their future games.
“We will balance the playing time across the team,” Minnesota coach Cameron Knowles said. “This will allow us to prepare players who may be needed soon.”
Kelvin Yeboah leads Minnesota with four goals, marking half of their total of eight goals. For Portland, Kristoffer Velde is the top scorer with three goals.
The availability of forward Alexander Aravena remains uncertain, as he trained separately this week.
“I think he will be fine,” Neville noted. “He had some tightness in his thigh but felt better on Thursday.”
As match day approaches, the Timbers are getting ready for colder weather.
“It’s going to be cold,” Neville said. “Conditions may be ideal for football, according to many players who are accustomed to playing in such temperatures.”
