Manchester United plans to strengthen its midfield during the 2026 summer transfer window.

A key target has just played a crucial role in helping his childhood club win the KNVB Cup in the Netherlands, scoring in the final match.

CentreDevils reported on United’s interest in this player back in November. This recent accomplishment might serve as a farewell gesture before what seems to be an inevitable summer transfer, as interest in him continues to grow.

Kees Smit helps his club win the cup

Kees Smit, a 20-year-old Dutch midfielder, scored during AZ Alkmaar’s 5-1 victory over NEC Nijmegen in the cup final. Manchester United has shown ongoing interest in signing him.

As noted by CentreDevils in November, the club has been tracking the Netherlands international’s development for some time. United’s recruitment director, Christopher Vivell, has discussed him internally.

Smit scored in the 91st minute and recorded an assist in his club’s win, marking AZ Alkmaar’s first cup victory since 2013.

With other top European clubs, including Real Madrid, also interested, Manchester United may need to act quickly.

One thing about Kees Smit is clear

There is considerable interest in Kees Smit, with several major European clubs inquiring about his availability from AZ Alkmaar.

While Manchester United has other targets, the 20-year-old may be a more affordable option compared to players like Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Carlos Baleba.

Kees Smit is widely recognized as a talented player. Netherlands national team coach Ronald Koeman has praised him, even comparing him to Pedri.

Koeman stated, “He’s a huge talent. One of the best young players in Dutch history.

“I can see him playing at Barça. He could be a combination of Frenkie de Jong and Pedri. That’s exceptional.

“The only challenge is affordability. No club in the Netherlands can match his price. He will likely go abroad. I hope he gets playing time there.”

Smit is viewed as a genuine talent in the Netherlands, and he could become a significant addition for Manchester United if they pursue him this summer.
