Phuthi Mohafe, head coach of Polokwane City, has defended the decision to host their Betway Premiership match against Kaizer Chiefs at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. This choice has drawn criticism, particularly regarding why the game was not held at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, which offers a greater capacity.

Mohafe stated that the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium is considered their true home ground, while the New Peter Mokaba Stadium is also designated as an alternative venue for the Chiefs. “The Old Peter Mokaba Stadium is our home ground. So, where must we play?” he questioned after the match, which ended in a goalless draw.

He emphasized the significance of playing at their own venue, explaining that when Polokwane City competes away, they are often at a disadvantage: “We deserve to play here, not anywhere else, because when we go away, we play on their field. So why not? Let us continue playing at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. It suits us better, and we do well when we are playing in this field.”

Mohafe continued to express his pride in the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, stating that despite its condition, it remains a beloved venue for his team. “Regardless of how the pitch looks, this is our wonderful pitch, and we love it. Everybody must come to our pitch and play us at our ground,” he asserted, underscoring the importance of recognizing their home advantage.
