A significant scandal has emerged in Italy, raising serious concerns about the integrity of professional sports in the country.
According to reports from La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Italian police have uncovered a sprawling elite prostitution network that operates across nearly every city in Italy. The investigation has implicated approximately 50 Serie A footballers, one Formula 1 driver, and over a hundred sex workers.
The investigation indicates that intermediaries, identified as Emanuele Buttini and his partner Debora Ronchi, facilitated the arrangement of prostitutes for high-profile athletes, charging around €1,000 per encounter while retaining half of the earnings. Incidents have been reported in which sex workers faced threats and blackmail after becoming pregnant by footballers, aimed at protecting the athletes’ reputations.
While authorities have not disclosed the identities of all implicated athletes, the breadth of the allegations suggests that players from Italy’s top clubs could be involved. This scandal poses significant implications for the integrity of sports in the nation.
