Blackburn Rovers Marks 150th Anniversary Amidst Challenging Championship Season

Blackburn Rovers is approaching the final weeks of a challenging 2025/26 campaign, currently ranked 19th in the Championship during their eighth consecutive season in the league. The club parted ways with manager Valerien Ismael by mutual consent in early February, soon appointing Michael O’Neill on a short-term basis, marking a dual role for the Northern Ireland manager at Ewood Park.

For a club of Rovers’ stature, this season has not met expectations. However, it holds significance beyond league standings, as the club celebrates its 150th anniversary.

Founded in 1875 and one of the twelve original members of the Football League in 1888, Rovers have a rich history. The club boasts six FA Cup wins and two First Division titles from the early 1900s. While it has been over a decade since their last presence in the Premier League, Rovers remain one of just seven English teams to have won the title. Their experience in the top flight includes two distinct periods: 1992 to 1999 and 2001 to 2012.

In this context, Rovers hosted a Gala Dinner to commemorate their 150th Anniversary, using the occasion to induct seven new Honour Cap recipients.

Among those honored were Alan Shearer, Craig Short, Charlie Mulgrew, Craig Conway, and goalkeeper Roger Jones, along with former players Phil Jones and Benni McCarthy.

Phil Jones, an academy product at Blackburn, received recognition for his memorable debut against Chelsea at just 18 years old. With 40 senior appearances before transferring to Manchester United in the summer of 2011 for a reported fee of £16.5 million, Jones enjoyed considerable success with the Red Devils, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Europa League during his tenure. However, his career at United was marred by injuries, leading to a departure from the club in 2023 after a twelve-year period, returning to Blackburn now in a coaching role.

Benni McCarthy, celebrated for his time at Ewood Park, scored 52 goals in 141 appearances between 2006 and 2010, becoming a cult hero with key strikes, including an FA Cup winner against Arsenal. His later appointment as a first-team coach at Manchester United by Erik ten Hag in July 2022 allowed McCarthy to further his influence in football, notably impacting Marcus Rashford’s scoring prowess. McCarthy concluded his association with United in the summer of 2024 after his contract was not renewed.

Both players are now etched into Blackburn Rovers history, having also made their mark at Old Trafford.
