Rangers have missed their opportunity to sign Lewis Ferguson, as the Premier League now appears to be the most likely destination for the Bologna midfielder this summer. Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider has confirmed that Ferguson is leaning toward a move to England.
Rangers Miss Out as Lewis Ferguson Sets His Sights on the Premier League
Despite his strong family connections to Ibrox, a return to Glasgow seems increasingly unlikely given Rangers‘ current budget constraints. His uncle, former Rangers captain and manager Barry Ferguson, openly stated that Bologna’s valuation has placed the 26-year-old beyond the club’s financial reach.
Ferguson’s career has been marked by resilience. After spending four years in the Rangers academy, he was released at age 14, prompting him to rebuild his career with Hamilton Academical and then Aberdeen. When Bologna signed him for £3 million in 2022, he made an immediate impact, scoring seven goals in his first Serie A season—the best performance by a Scottish player in Italy since Denis Law’s time with Torino in the early 1960s.
Even a severe ACL injury in April 2024 could not keep him down for long. He guided Bologna to their first Coppa Italia final in over 50 years, eventually winning the trophy after a 1-0 victory over Milan in May 2025. This achievement made him the first Scotsman to do so since Graeme Souness.
In the current 2025–26 campaign, Ferguson has played 1,233 minutes and scored once, showcasing the determination that has led to five yellow cards and one red card so far. On the Transfer Insider podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke noted that while Premier League scouts have monitored Ferguson since his time at Aberdeen, his recent success in Italy has made him a prime target.
“I can’t see why not. Premier League clubs have looked at him before when he was up at Aberdeen. Since he made that move to Bologna, he has really stepped up and done well for them. That opportunity to move to Rangers has passed them by, because Rangers wouldn’t be able to afford to sign him from Bologna right now.
“I’m sure a lot of Premier League clubs will sit up and take notice of him as well, but I don’t think Bologna are in any rush to sell him right now. He’s more likely to return, maybe not to Scotland but to England in the Premier League, because obviously they’d be able to afford any potential fee that Bologna would want for him.”
