Tottenham Eyes New Goalkeeper to Replace Guglielmo Vicario

Guglielmo Vicario has been Tottenham Hotspur’s undisputed No.1 since arriving from Italian club Empoli in 2023. The 29-year-old has not yet convinced fans with his performances to secure his future as the club’s long-term first-choice goalkeeper.

In recent months, it has been widely reported that Inter Milan is advancing in negotiations to sign Vicario from Spurs this summer as they seek a new No.1 to replace Yann Sommer. The Italian international has reportedly agreed on personal terms with Inter ahead of a potential move. Additionally, the Serie A club’s sporting director traveled to London for discussions with the player in March.

Despite his inconsistent performances, Vicario was a consistent presence until recently when he suffered a hernia injury. He underwent hernia surgery during the March international break, giving Antonin Kinsky a chance to replace him after a challenging Champions League debut against Atletico Madrid last month.

Elia Caprile Emerges as Alternative Goalkeeper Option for Inter Milan

While Vicario is Inter Milan’s primary target, the club is also exploring other options as they prepare for the departure of Sommer, whose contract ends this season. According to a report from Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile has surfaced as an alternative target to Vicario. Interestingly, Caprile replaced Vicario at Empoli when he first joined in 2023 before moving to Cagliari in 2025, initially on loan before his permanent transfer last summer.

The 24-year-old has proven to be a dependable presence for Cagliari, making 33 appearances this season, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding 47 goals as Cagliari fights against relegation.

It appears Inter may see Caprile as a younger and more cost-effective alternative to Vicario. Tottenham might also share this view, as Caprile has caught the eye of Spurs scouts this season after leaving Leeds United permanently in 2022.

For the time being, Vicario remains Inter’s top choice. However, if an agreement with Spurs cannot be reached, it would not be surprising for the Nerazzurri to intensify their efforts to sign Caprile. From Tottenham’s perspective, the Cagliari keeper matches the profile suited for Roberto De Zerbi’s system. With strong aerial command, solid box presence, and technical ability, he could provide a long-term solution to Spurs’ goalkeeping challenges.

Nevertheless, any potential move for Caprile will heavily depend on whether De Zerbi’s team remains in the top flight.
