Concerns are rising among supporters that the retractable playing surface at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium may be contributing to the club’s persistent injury crisis, prompting calls for serious attention to this issue.

In recent years, the club has seen a troubling number of serious injuries impacting key players. Injuries are a common occurrence in sports, yet the repeated use of a pitch system that differs from traditional grass surfaces warrants investigation. As players train and compete on this surface week after week, the cumulative physical strain should not be overlooked.

Reports indicate that similar hybrid pitch systems used by other clubs, particularly Real Madrid, have led to internal reviews after increases in long-term injuries, including severe ligament damage.

Tottenham has faced a significant injury list in recent seasons, with the 2025/26 campaign proving especially challenging: multiple ACL ruptures have occurred, including players such as Wilson Odobert (February 2026) and Xavi Simons (April 2026), along with earlier injuries to James Maddison and Radu Dragusin. Since January 2025, the club has recorded at least four ACL injuries, plus additional knee issues like Dejan Kulusevski’s patella problems.

Other long-term absences include muscular and hamstring injuries affecting Dominic Solanke, Destiny Udogie, and Mohammed Kudus, as well as issues with ankles and shoulders. The team has missed countless player-games due to these injuries over several seasons, impacting their performance and even raising fears of relegation in 2025/26.

This disturbing trend is not new, as the club has reported high injury counts under various management, including Ange Postecoglou.

When such patterns emerge, they must be investigated thoroughly rather than dismissed. The petition urges the club to undertake an independent and transparent review of the current pitch’s safety and performance.

Supporters, players, and staff alike deserve clarity regarding the surface’s suitability, as well as whether changes may be necessary to ensure player welfare and the club’s long-term success. Failing to address this issue could threaten not only the team’s performance but also the health and careers of the players central to its success.

It is critical to ask: is the pitch contributing to the problem?
