Xavi Simons Suffers ACL Injury in Tottenham’s Win Over Wolves

One step forward, two steps back. That has summarized Tottenham’s season as they strive to maintain their Premier League status. They finally ended their winless streak in the league last weekend against Wolves at Molineux Stadium, but it came at a significant cost. The North London side lost a key player in Xavi Simons early in the second half after the Dutchman was seen clutching his knee in pain near the touchline.

Supporters feared the worst, and given the club’s recent struggles with injuries, there was growing concern that the Lilywhites were about to lose one of their most critical players during a vital phase of the campaign. This concern was validated when Spurs announced that Xavi Simons had ruptured his ACL and would be sidelined for several months. The timing of the injury could not have been worse for the North Londoners, as the prolific 23-year-old had finally found his rhythm at N17, displaying renewed belief and confidence.

Simons had been enjoying a standout period for the Lilywhites, contributing significantly to the team’s crucial draw against Brighton earlier that week. Coach Roberto de Zerbi had emphasized his reliance on the Dutchman to help steer the team away from the relegation zone. However, Tottenham now faces the challenge of continuing their momentum, starting with their upcoming match against Aston Villa.

Tottenham Will Feel Xavi Simons’ Absence

Tottenham star Xavi Simons did not make an immediate impact upon joining the club but required time to adjust to the Premier League’s demands. Jamie O’Hara even compared him to former Manchester United player Antony during his slow start. However, the Dutchman made significant progress throughout the season, emerging as one of Tottenham’s standout performers before his recent injury.

Jermaine Beckford believes that Spurs will truly miss their star player during their fight against relegation as Simons begins recovery from his knee injury. Speaking on BBC Radio, Beckford stated,

“He has given Tottenham a bit of a spark this season. The club hasn’t had many players who have looked like they have something to genuinely offer or who could be proud of leaving everything on the line week in week out this season. He was a bit of a slow burner at first, but he has been one of two standout performers for me this season along with Archie Gray.”

The pundit added,

“[ACL] is such a difficult injury to come back from. It is a bad one. The recovery period is between seven and nine months, if you’re able to do your rehab properly, but he does have youth on his side and he should be able to recover fully. However, it will take him a bit of time to catch up with the pace and trust his own body again.”

As Beckford points out, Xavi Simons has been crucial for Tottenham in the final third. The Dutchman consistently gave his all on the pitch, despite a slow start at N17. It is fair to assert that the 23-year-old has been one of the key players for the North Londoners during the latter half of the campaign. However, recovering from an ACL injury is not a quick process, and Simons may not return as the same player he was prior to the injury.

Spurs will undoubtedly miss Xavi Simons’ influence in the upcoming matches. He worked tirelessly off the ball and constantly sought to create opportunities in possession. His knack for making decisive passes in crucial areas is exceptional, and finding a way to replace that quality will be essential for the Lilywhites under Roberto de Zerbi as they aim to secure their Premier League status in the months ahead. How they will manage this remains to be seen.
