Manchester United Eyes Alejandro Balde as Left-Back Solution

Manchester United are preparing for a pivotal summer transfer window as they aim to qualify for the Champions League and rebuild their squad under Michael Carrick. The focus is primarily on strengthening the midfield.

Sandro Tonali is a top target, with Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, and others also being monitored as the club seeks to replace both Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte in one window.

The rebuild extends beyond the midfield, with attention also on the defense. Tyrell Malacia will depart Old Trafford after his contract ends in June, following a knee injury that sidelined him for the entire 2023/24 season.

Luke Shaw, who is still the senior left-back, has performed well under Carrick but turns 31 in July. His injury history raises concerns about relying on him as a consistent starter for another season.

Diogo Dalot has filled in when needed, but he is primarily a right-back, while Patrick Dorgu has been used more as a wing-back than as a natural left-back.

Therefore, it is clear that United need a new left-back who can step into a starting role immediately. Spanish publication Sport reports that United have rekindled their interest in Barcelona‘s Alejandro Balde, with Barcelona open to offers if the club receives a suitable bid.

Manchester United renew interest in Alejandro Balde

Balde, 22, has seen his situation at Camp Nou change significantly this season. Once considered a long-term replacement for Jordi Alba, he has lost his starting spot with Joao Cancelo now occupying the left-back position. Barcelona is actively looking for additional reinforcements in that area.

Though Balde’s contract runs until 2028, providing Barcelona with leverage on the transfer fee, the club’s financial situation could facilitate a sale. Barcelona needs outgoing transfers to fund their summer plans, which include significant targets such as a centre-back and a top-tier striker.

Balde and Jules Koundé are reportedly players that the club may consider selling if substantial offers are made, with a fee over £43 million (€50 million) being the mark that would attract the club’s attention.

United’s interest in Balde has existed for some time, though the circumstances now appear more favorable for a potential transfer.

While Barcelona is not forcing a sale, they also don’t regard Balde as untouchable, keeping the possibility open. However, Balde himself presents the greatest challenge; reports indicate that he has not indicated a willingness to move and is unlikely to pursue a transfer.

As a product of Barcelona’s academy and a player with significant ties to the club, leaving for the Premier League would require a major personal decision for Balde.

Manchester United, for their part, will not initiate formal negotiations unless Balde shows interest in the move. Thus, while the situation remains fluid, Manchester United is closely monitoring developments, particularly given Barcelona’s financial needs.
