Tottenham Faces Setback in Pursuit of Rangers Captain James Tavernier
Tottenham Hotspur is experiencing challenges as they aim to improve their standings. The team secured their first Premier League victory of 2026 last weekend against Wolves, yet they remain in the bottom three following West Ham’s last-minute win against Everton.
Meanwhile, Spurs are making preparations for the upcoming summer transfer window, focusing on defensive reinforcements. Recent reports indicate that manager Roberto De Zerbi is interested in reuniting with AC Milan left-back Pervis Estupinan. Additionally, there appears to be an agreement in principle for the North London club to sign Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth, as his contract at the Vitality Stadium is set to expire.
The club is also linked to James Tavernier, the experienced captain of Rangers. The right-back, known as the highest-scoring in his position, has confirmed he will leave Rangers at the end of the season, although his next destination remains uncertain amid rising interest. Recent developments suggest that his future could be away from England.
Rangers Star Tavernier Prefers Saudi Move Over Spurs
James Tavernier has drawn attention from Tottenham as the summer transfer window approaches. The 34-year-old’s potential availability on a free transfer from Rangers has piqued Spurs’ interest. However, reports indicate that the full-back may not be inclined to move to England.
Former Spurs scout Mick Brown has claimed that Tavernier is leaning towards rejecting a return to England, favoring a lucrative contract in the Saudi Pro League. The Rangers defender is reportedly seeking a new challenge, whether in Saudi Arabia or elsewhere in Europe, suggesting that a move to England is not on his agenda.
“There’s nothing set in stone with Tavernier. There’s been interest from Saudi Arabia. Obviously, he’s announced that he’s leaving Rangers after a really successful 11-year spell at the club,” Mick Brown stated on the Transfer Insider podcast (h/t Football Insider).
“I don’t envisage that he will make the move down to England in the Premier League. I think probably at this stage of his career, Tavernier himself would prefer a new challenge, so maybe a move to Europe or the Saudi Pro League, where there has been interest in the past.
“He’ll have options from several clubs in different countries, and maybe big contracts as well, so a return to England now is unlikely.”
Setback for Tottenham!
It is understood that Tottenham is interested in Tavernier’s leadership and experience to help them bounce back if relegation occurs. However, Wolves, who are confirmed to be relegated from the top flight, are also interested in him.
Spurs’ strategy makes sense, especially as keeping Pedro Porro may be challenging if they face relegation. A player like Tavernier would not only provide quality on the pitch but also a strong voice in the dressing room. Nevertheless, with Tavernier prioritizing a move to Saudi Arabia following his successful career at Rangers, Tottenham’s management will need to search for other options to strengthen their full-back position.
